Part 1: Core Toolkit Information
DsnS102 Primary and Secondary Toolkit
Order a Primary and/or a Secondary Toolkit for DsnS102 from the ISU Bookstore by locating the available kits on your book list. The Toolkits are also available by visiting the ISU Bookstore and searching for your course and section number where the Toolkits are available for purchase.

Please note, this is the second semester that the Core and the ISU Bookstore are working together on the Core Toolkits. Therefore, the Bookstore has prepared a limited amount of Toolkits available to students each semester. Be proactive to purchase a kit and save on money!
What is included in the Primary Toolkit:
Designed for use in both DsnS102 and DsnS131, the kit includes:
- Large Portfolio, Prat brand
- Drawing Pad 18"x24", Strathmore brand
- Two Large Binder Clips, Charles Leonard brand
- Drawing Pencils 4H, 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, Staedtler brand
- Pink Pearl Eraser, Papermate brand
- Kneaded Eraser, Staedtler brand
- Pencil Sharpener, Staedtler brand
- Razor Knife, Excel brand
- Razor Knife Replacement Blades, 15 pack, Excel brand
What is included in the Secondary Toolkit:
Designed for DsnS102, the kit includes:

- Sharpie Marker, Double End F/XF, Black, Sanford Brand
- Drafting Tape, Pacific Arc Brand

Part 2: General List of Materials/Supplies used in DsnS102
It is recommended to wait to purchase course materials until after the first day of studio unless otherwise instructed by your studio section instructor. Due to potential supply chain issues, it is recommended to be prepared ahead of time. In the first week and throughout the semester, your studio instructor will review this list with you and provide further guidance on what you will need.
The most common items that will be needed for the first few weeks in the 302010: Project 1 include:
- Drawing Pad 18"x24", Strathmore brand or similar
- Black pens, Sakura's black Micron Pen Set is common
- Pencils and eraser
- Drafting Tape
- Metal Ruler, 18", cork backing
Most of the materials needed for this course can be purchased at the ISU Bookstore: https://www.isubookstore.comLinks to an external site.. Many online retailers may have better prices on some items. Compare prices before you buy and be proactive about purchasing supplies in advance of when they are needed.
Next to the common supplies listed in the Toolkits and below in the general materials list, each instructor will require a different hierarchy of materials. Please consult your instructor for a final purchase list per project. There are projects that require additional and creative materials so please be prepared to purchase and acquire materials throughout the semester. You may also find it beneficial to scavenge for and reuse materials. Collaboratively buying materials with your peers is also an option.

If purchasing art supplies from the ISU Bookstore, please be aware of their return policy on some items. For example, it is recommended to carefully examine a piece of art paper or craft board before buying to make sure it is not damaged or stained. Once you buy it you can’t return it.
Please read the following list carefully. Some items that are listed are not required or only needed if requested by your studio instructor. Your instructor will advise you on what you do and don’t need to complete your studio work for each project.
Storage:
- Material Containers (Toolbox, tins, jars, etc.)
- Portfolio (18”x24” minimum)
- Travel Bag (backpack, reusable grocery bag, etc.)
Computer, Software, and Tech:

- Adobe Suite Creative Cloud
- Be advised by instructions in DsnS132 first. There may be different instructions then what is mentioned below. The following instructions were followed in DsnS102 in Spring 2022.
- As a CORE design student, you have direct access to the Adobe Suite.
- To get access to the Creative Cloud using your personal computer, please use the following directions:
“To access this license go to https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud.htmlLinks to an external site.. Click "Sign-In" in the upper right hand corner. Enter your ISU email address "netid@iastate.edu" and continue. On the following screen select "Work or School Account". This will then send you to an OKTA login where you will sign in with your ISU netID. When you get done logging in, choose Open Creative Cloud on the main screen. This will give you access to all of the applications.” You can download the creative cloud desktop app from https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/desktop-app.htmlLinks to an external site. Logging into that, again with the ‘Work or School Account’ selected (not “personal” account) you should be able to download the various applications."

- If you are having issues with Adobe's Creative Cloud, please contact the College of Design IT group Links to an external site. by using the following email, codsupport@iastate.edu.
- The College of Design's Open Lab Links to an external site. on the fourth floor, rm. 446, is available to you where the provided computers have direct access to the Adobe Suite.
- The DsnS102 curriculum is not structured to specifically teach the Adobe Suite program. The inclusion of the programs, like Photoshop, in projects is Per Instructor. Students are always encouraged to explore various avenues of creative and design expressions. Instructors will define the incorporation of and limits of the use of Adobe Suite in the classroom and projects.

- Using your smart phone camera is okay, too. Quality of documentation is key.
- SD Cards (for cameras)
- Not required, but helpful if you use a camera often. The Output Center Links to an external site. provides SD cards with each camera at checkout.
Paper/Boards:
- Sketchbook: 8.5”x11” or larger (your instructor may request a specific size sketchbook)
- Large Drawing Pad: 18”x24” (white or off-white colored paper)
- Tracing Paper, Pad: 18”x24” or Roll (varies in width and length)
- Other paper and board alternatives:
- Your studio instructor will advise your studio on alternative paper options and use of boards. The ISU Bookstore provides a variety of paper and board supplies to aid you in your projects.
- Recycled cardboard and collage material (Salvaged)
- Color-Aid Paper, packet of 220 Colors, 4.5”x 6”
- Don’t Purchase unless requested by your studio instructor.
- Magazines and Found Papers (e.g. old posters, flyers, illustrations, books)
- Can be used for collage, mixed media, and color studies
Mark Making: Many optional materials listed
- Graphite Drawing Pencils – F, HB, and B range
- Micron pens, black (6 pen pack with 005, 01, 02, 03, 05, 06)
- Black Markers – a variety of thicknesses –
- Sharpie fine and extra-fine point
- Ballpoint Pens (common and inexpensive pens)
- Paintbrushes
- Various sizes depending on the work you are doing
- Inexpensive Value Packs work great
- Prismacolor and Copic color pens in various hues
- Be advised by your instructor prior to purchasing
- Water-based paint (acrylic, watercolor, gouache)
- Koh-I-Noor® or Staedtler® Lead holder
- Be advised by your instructor prior to purchasing
- Koh-I-Noor® or Staedtler® leads in a range of hardness, from 6B, 4B, 2B, H, HB, 2H, 4H, 6H

Cutting:
- Large Scissors
- X-Acto knife and X-Acto blades (#11)
- #11 packs of 100 blades are available and recommend
- Self-healing cutting surface, at least 12”x18” or larger
Erasers:
- White eraser
- Kneaded Eraser
Adhesives:
- Stick Glue (UHU brand suggested)
- White glue (Sobo brand suggested)

- Super Glue (Bob Smith or Loctite brands suggested)
- Be advised by your instructor prior to purchasing
- Liquitex Matte Medium Gel or Mod Podge Matte Gel (good for mixed media)
- Be advised by your instructor prior to purchasing
- Choose Matte, NOT Gloss.
- Mod Podge is great for beginners and is an inexpensive product.
- Liquitex brand is pricier, but better quality.
- Drafting tape or Masking Tape, or Washi Tape
- Washi Tape is a popular alternative in recent years.
Measuring/Precision:
