Credit Report Reflection
Purpose:
Learn what is in a credit report by reviewing your own credit report.
Step 1: Get Your Credit Report
Note: If you can’t get your report by the due date, that’s okay—submit the assignment later. No points will be deducted.
Visit https://www.annualcreditreport.com to request your free report from Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax.
NOTE: Do not PAY for your credit report. The website: https://www.annualcreditreport.com IS THE ONLY site to get a FREE CREDIT REPORT.
You’ll need to provide your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth.
Avoid using public computers or unsecured Wi-Fi.
If you need to mail a request, let me know—it may take up to 4 weeks.
If you do not have any credit accounts yet:
You still need to request a report. This is important because:
- It teaches you the process for obtaining a credit report.
- It helps you check if anyone has fraudulently used your Social Security number to open accounts in your name.
- It ensures there are no mistakes, such as information from someone else with the same name appearing on your report.
Step 2: Review Your Report
Check for accuracy and look for common errors like:
- Wrong personal info or accounts that aren’t yours
- Incorrect payment history or account status
- Duplicate or outdated entries
If you find errors:
Follow the dispute instructions included in your report. Use the CFPB’s “Credit Report Dispute” guide (posted in the Credit module) for help.
Step 3: Show Proof of Completion
Answer the questions in the assignment, including the Credit Report number.
