GER 370G All Sections (Fall 2017)

This course looks at representations of women in traditionally male-dominated fields. From arts, sciences, music, and politics to sports, travel, and foreign diplomacy – how do women participate in these professions and how are they represented in the media? Focusing on Germany and Austria as our primary areas of analysis, we will explore how women engaging in traditionally male disciplines are represented in text and image; then and today. What did it mean to be a 19th century “sportswoman”? What did the turn of the century Berlin fashion press have to say about women in medicine? What does it mean to be a female scientist and the political leader of one of the most powerful countries in the European Union? We will talk about all of these topics and more.
