Instructions

Purpose

This optional learning activity will help you review the concepts of allowable stress design. (It does not assess problem-solving ability, however.)

  • Module 04 Objective 1 Understand that a successful design makes allowances for many factors that cannot be quantified with great certainty.
  • Module 04 Objective 2 List possible sources of uncertainty that could affect the strength, stiffness, or stability of a structure or machine.
  • Module 04 Objective 3 Define dead load, live load, snow load, and wind load.
  • Module 04 Objective 4 Incorporate a factor of safety into the design of a structure for a given load; or compute the factor of safety for a given structure and load; or compute the maximum allowable load for a given design and factor of safety.

These Module Objectives support the following course learning outcome(s):

  • calculate and illustrate the normal and shear stress components, normal and shear strains, and deformation of standard idealized elements such as shafts, beams, columns, and thin-wall pressure vessels due to axial, torsional, and flexural loads, pressurization, and/or changes in temperature.
  • understand the basic types of mechanical failure for ductile and brittle materials and buckling of columns. Calculate the conditions which would result in yielding, fracture, or elastic instability and the factor of safety relative to such failures.

Task

For each question, select the best answer. Discussion and collaboration is encouraged!
Chegg and similar "homework help" websites are prohibited, due to numerous errors that misinform and confuse students.
The correct answers will be made available after you submit your first attempt. If you would like clarification, ask Jenny.
Learn the concepts so that you are able to answer all the questions correctly. Attempt this learning activity as many times as you would like.

Grading Criteria

This optional learning activity is not graded.

You will receive the most benefit from this learning activity if you discuss the questions and answers with classmates.
