Purpose
This optional learning activity will help you review the concepts of slope and deflection of transverse-loaded beams. (It does not assess problem-solving ability, however.)
- Module 8 Objective 1 Use discontinuity functions to express the internal bending moment of a beam as a function of position.
- Module 8 Objective 2 Evaluate and integrate discontinuity functions.
- Module 8 Objective 3 Define beam deflection and slope of the elastic curve.
- Module 8 Objective 4 Use appropriate symbols to represent the slope and deflection of a beam.
- Module 8 Objective 5 Report beam deflection and slope values with appropriate SI and US customary units.
- Module 8 Objective 6 Write boundary conditions relating the deflection and slope of simply supported and cantilever beams at specific positions along the beam.
- Module 8 Objective 7 Identify redundant beam supports.
- Module 8 Objective 8 Analyze statically indeterminate beams using discontinuity functions.
These Module Objectives support the following course learning outcome(s):
- apply section properties (first, second, and polar moments of area; radius of gyration) for the purpose of stress and deformation analysis of beams, shafts, and/or columns.
- calculate and illustrate the normal and shear stress components, normal and shear strains, and deformation of standard idealized elements such as shafts, beams, columns, and thin-wall pressure vessels due to axial, torsional, and flexural loads, pressurization, and/or changes in temperature.
Task
For each question, select the best answer. Discussion and collaboration is encouraged!
Chegg and similar "homework help" websites are prohibited, due to numerous errors that misinform and confuse students.
The correct answers will be made available after you submit your first attempt. If you would like clarification, ask Jenny.
Learn the concepts so that you are able to answer all the questions correctly. Attempt this learning activity as many times as you would like.
Grading Criteria
This optional learning activity is not graded.
You will receive the most benefit from this learning activity if you discuss the questions and answers with classmates.
