Purpose

This optional learning activity will help you review the concepts of mechanical properties. (It does not assess problem-solving ability, however.)

  • Module 03 Objective 1 Define and assign appropriate symbols and units to each of the following mechanical properties of materials: modulus of elasticity, ductility, yield strength, ultimate strength, and Poisson's ratio.
  • Module 03 Objective 2 Describe Hooke's law for uniaxial stress and Hooke's law for shear stress and shear strain.
  • Module 03 Objective 3 Describe the relationship between transverse (lateral) strain and longitudinal strain.
  • Module 03 Objective 4 Distinguish between engineering stress and true stress on a stress-strain curve from tensile test data.
  • Module 03 Objective 5 Identify elastic region, plastic region, necking, proportional limit, 0.2% offset stress, ultimate strength, and fracture stress on a stress-strain curve from tensile test data.
  • Module 03 Objective 6 Use tensile test data to estimate Young's modulus (a.k.a., elastic modulus, modulus of elasticity) of a material.
  • Module 03 Objective 7 Report the range of possible values for Poisson's ratio; and understand that many engineering materials have a Poisson's ratio of about 0.3.

These Module Objectives support the following course learning outcome(s):

  • define each of the following mechanical properties: modulus of elasticity, ductility, yield strength, ultimate strength, and coefficient of thermal expansion; and describe how each property characterizes the material response of a linear elastic, homogeneous, isotropic material or structure.

Task

For each question, select the best answer. Discussion and collaboration is encouraged!
Chegg and similar "homework help" websites are prohibited, due to numerous errors that misinform and confuse students.
The correct answers will be made available after you submit your first attempt. If you would like clarification, ask Jenny.
Learn the concepts so that you are able to answer all the questions correctly. Attempt this learning activity as many times as you would like.

Grading Criteria

This optional learning activity is not graded.

You will receive the most benefit from this learning activity if you discuss the questions and answers with classmates.
