MICRO 302 Lab Spring 2022
Catalog Description MICRO 302L: Prereq: Credit or enrollment in MICRO 302 Basic microbiology laboratory techniques for majors in microbiology, biological sciences and related fields. Credit for either Micro 201L or 302L, but not both, may be applied toward graduation. Learning Outcomes Master basic microbiology knowledge and laboratory techniques that will be essential for future coursework and careers: • Use safe microbiology practices including using personal protective equipment and correct handling of bacterial specimens • Prevent contamination through precise aseptic technique and use streak and spread techniques to isolate organisms • Use streak and spread techniques to isolate organisms • Properly prepare, view, and interpret stained slides of bacteria using microscopy • Use selective media and environmental factors to affect the growth and isolation of microbes • Estimate the number of bacteria in a sample through viable plate count and spectrophotometric methods • Describe bacterial diversity and microbial impact on human health through water, food, and clinical samples • Use biochemical media and skills learned in laboratory to identify unknown bacteria • Use introductory molecular techniques to identify unknown bacteria • Demonstrate how to control microbial growth through the use of chemical agents • Adequately and accurately document laboratory protocols, results, and conclusions in lab notebooks • Form hypotheses and design experiments based on the scientific method and analyze results. Then communicate experimental results in written formats.
