Course Description

This course is designed to get you started on your journey as an Iowa State Mechanical Engineer. By participating in ENGR 101, you will become aware of important policies for the College of Engineering, as well as a variety of resources and strategies to aid you in becoming a successful student.

Course Objectives (COs)

Upon completing this course, students will be able to do the following:

Grading Scheme

ENGR 101 is a satisfactory/fail course. To pass the course, students must:

  • Attend at least 7 of the 9 sessions (no exceptions!)
  • Attend the Engineering Career Fair or one of the alternate programs listed on Canvas
  • Earn at least 80% of the assignment points in the course (200 out of 250 total points)
  • Earn a score of at least 80% on the final exam

 If you fail Engineering 101, you will be required to repeat it until you pass – Engineering 101 is part of your Basic Program.

 

Missed and late coursework

Assignments are listed in Canvas and are to be submitted in Canvas by 11:59pm on the due date. All assignment instructions and rubrics can be found on Canvas. If an assignment is late, you may earn up to half credit if it is turned in no later than one week past the deadline. Anything more than a week late will receive a zero.

If you have an extenuating circumstance that will prevent you from meeting a deadline, you must talk to me prior to the due date to be considered for an extension. 

Course Policies

Attendance

  • Attendance is required and will be monitored.

  • You are allowed two absences for this class—please use them wisely. If you are absent from class for any reason, you will be counted absent. Interviews, illnesses, family emergencies, etc., are not foreseeable—do not assume that you will not be impacted by them at some point during the term.

  • If you arrive later than 10 minutes after the start of class, you will be counted absent for that class period.

Classroom

  • Treat presenters, classmates, and the instructor with courtesy and respect. Be thoughtful about your comments to others in our classroom, and do not use accusatory, derogatory, or hurtful statements.

  • Turn off unnecessary electronics during class (phone, laptop, etc.). If you are seen misusing your electronics in class, you will lose attendance points for the day.

  • Inappropriate behavior, cheating, or plagiarism will not be tolerated. You are expected to complete assignments individually (except for group projects) and in your own words. Any resources used should be cited. Instances of plagiarism will be reported to the Dean of Students Office and will result in an ‘F’ grade in the course.

Communication

  • Should you encounter any issues with assignments, quizzes, or course content; please be sure to communicate with me immediately, the sooner you can communicate these issues, the better. I am always willing to work through a situation when there is communication.

  • Class rosters are provided to the instructor with the student's legal name. I will gladly honor your request to address you by an alternate name or gender pronoun. Please advise me of this early in the semester so that I may make appropriate changes to my records.

Grade Appeal Process

  • If you become concerned about your instructor's class management, please communicate your concerns with your instructor. Concerns sometimes relate to grading methods, paper turnaround time, and course policies, as examples.
