EX 1 PHOTOGRAPH 30 (curated from 50 total): due 8.24
Curate a photographed collection of 30 PATTERNS AND TEXTURE
- Photograph 50 images using a camera or mobile device
- Crop & Recolor (make grayscale or b/w--note: this step can be done in step 1 or 2)
- Save the file as high-quality jpg or heif file following the naming conventions: "LastName_FirstName_Module1-Ex1_Image#"
- File Organization: Upload the 50 images to your CyBox Module 1 Folder: EX1 First Round
- Curate 30 from the 50 images which are strong compositions
- Edit if necessary (Step 1A above)
- Copy / Upload the curated images to CyBox Module 1 Folder: EX1 Curated Collections
Evaluation Criteria: Exploration of pattern, texture, and shadow; recognize abstract compositions, curation of quality subject representation through documentation
Lecture 8.24
EX 2 TRANSLATE 20: due dates 8.29 drawings / 8.31 upload scan
Inspired by the documented patterns and textures from Ex. 1, identify 20 photographs and translate each into 1x1.5" drawings using only black pen and a range of single-weight lines.
Evaluation Criteria: Depth of investigation, quality of the translation of pattern and texture representation, understanding and quality of line type, weight, and value
Lecture 8.29 Download Lecture 8.29
EX 3 REIMAGINE 10: due dates 9.5 critiques / 9.7 upload scan
Choose 10 of your 1”x1.5” drawings to reimagine each as a 3”x 3” drawing using black pen engaging a range of single-weight lines.
Evaluation Criteria: Selected patterns and textures have evolved revealing developed compositions that are creative and original, selected patterns and textures meet the enlarged scale, quality of translation through quality and experimentation of mark making that includes line type, weight, and value
EX 4 COLLAGE: Should be finished by 9.12, critiques held on 9.14 critiques, upload to CyBox by 9.19
Identify five (Ex. 3) 3”x3” drawings and translate them into five black, white, and grayscale collages addressing the following ten design principles. Without repeating, assign two principles per collage: Hierarchy, Rhythm, Emphasis, Variety, Unity, Pattern, Proportion, Movement, Repetition, and Balance.
Evaluation Criteria: Understanding and representation of all 10 design principles, the inventiveness of translation from drawing to collage, attention to surface and texture, understanding of figure-ground relationships, composition, material use and craft

Collage techniques including video demonstration from Prof. Edwards
EX 5 MIXED MEDIA EVOLUTION: final reviews Sept 21
Selecting one or more Ex. 4 collages, develop a 10”x10” mixed media composition that intentionally evolves the patterns and/or textures that reside within the selected collages to the enlarged format.
Mixed Media term: artwork composed from a combination of different media or materials (collage materials + mark making tools)
Evaluation Criteria: Development and techniques of mixed media showcasing quality of line and shape type, weight, and value, quality of evolution and scale shift of the composition, understanding of figure-ground relationships, and craft and care of the development of the final composition
