Project 2 - Ex. 2 Ideation

- Points 0
PART 1
In Exercise 2 we will be working with paper and cardboard models (maquettes) to consider ways in which the physical form moves in an environment. We will transfer 2d forms into 3d forms with kinetic parts.
We will begin by using our toy memories and stripping the figures down into their basic forms — silhouettes of shapes and parts. We will then translate from the 2d form to a 3d sculpture in Part 2.
For the first part, please review the instructions noted here: Paper Maquette Instructions Download Paper Maquette Instructions
Due: Thursday, Oct. 5 start of class. To receive full points for this portion, your figures should be cut out and ready to assemble
PART 2 -- NOW EXTRA CREDIT (per class discussion 10.10)
For part 2 of the Ideation exercise, we will create three-dimensional referential forms of our toy figures using paper, cardboard, string, and glue. Keep it simple! How can you get your idea across with minimal building? These models should not be a replica of the original toy; instead are just inspired by the toy as a building exercise in order to become more familiar with the materials. As designers, we are working to problem solve and communicate our ideas in the form of a sculpture--quickly. Your focus should be on capturing dimension, volume, shapes, and care in assembly.
TOOLS:
- good craft glue (gluestick may not work successfully) or tape
- ruler
- cutting blade (XActo / Olfa)
- cardboard
Select which design approach you plan to incorporate for your 3D model. Consider how you may incorporate color into the model...paper? paint? Research the following options:
- Stacked cardboard layers figure (maquette) or
- Sculpting with internal shapes, a framework (cardboard sculpting)
- Other ideas? Go for it!
Due TUES OCT 17 3D cardboard model if you would like extra credit. After 10.17, late submissions for this extra credit assignment will not be eligible.
