Project Highlights
This project involves exercises that investigate the evolution of pattern and mark-making. This will be accomplished through the use of photography, drawing with pen, collaging, and the construction of a 3D sculpture and/or color interaction (as per studio). The goals of this project give an understanding of the use of line types and weights, pen as drawing media, materiality of collage, 2D to 3D transition and/or color (as per studio), compositional strategies, design principles, critiquing work produced and thinking through the development and presentation of a concept.
Objectives
Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:
- MLO 1.1 Visually translate the evolution of selected textures and patterns over a series of project exercises. (CLO 1 and CLO 3)
- MLO 1.2 Demonstrate the evolution of the selected textures and patterns using a sequential series of different media in this order: photography, pen mark-making, paper collaging, and mixed media. (CLO 4)
- MLO 1.3 Demonstrate an understanding of compositional strategies by engaging frame and orientation, visual organization, figure-ground, and scale-shift. (CLO 1)
- MLO 1.4 Demonstrate a sophistication of craft and capability of material use in project work for review and exhibition. (CLO 5)
- MLO 1.5 Be able to communicate on how the Elements and Principles of Design are used and have transformed exercises within the project demonstrated through small group discussion, desk-critiques, in-progress and final presentations. (CLO 2)

In this module project, you will explore each exercise in the sequential order presented below emphasizing the evolution of compositional play and translation of media interpretation.
Ex. 1 - Photograph and curate a collection of 30 patterns and texture that you observe around you.
Evaluation Criteria: Exploration of pattern, texture, and shadow; recognize abstract compositions, curation of quality subject representation through documentation
Ex. 2 - Inspired by the documented patterns and textures from Ex. 1, identify 20 photographs and translate each into 1”x1.5” drawings using only black pen and a range of single-weight lines.
Evaluation Criteria: Depth of investigation, quality of translation of pattern and texture representation, understanding and quality of line type, weight, and value
Ex. 3 - Choose 10 of your 1”x1.5” drawings to reimagine each as a 3”x 3” drawing using black pen engaging a range of single-weight lines.
Evaluation Criteria: Selected patterns and textures have evolved revealing developed compositions that are creative and original, selected patterns and textures meet the enlarged scale, quality of translation through quality and experimentation of mark making that includes line type, weight, and value
Ex. 4 - Identify five Ex. 3 3”x3” drawings and translate into five black, white, and grayscale collages addressing the following ten design principles. Without repeating, assign two principles per collage: Hierarchy, Rhythm, Emphasis, Variety, Unity, Pattern, Proportion, Movement, Repetition, and Balance.
Evaluation Criteria: Understanding and representation of all 10 design principles, the inventiveness of translation from drawing to collage, attention to surface and texture, understanding of figure-ground relationships, composition, material use and craft
Ex. 5 - Selecting one or more Ex. 4 collages, develop a 10”x10” mixed media composition that intentionally evolves the patterns and/or textures that reside within the selected collages to the enlarged format.
Evaluation Criteria: Development and techniques of mixed media showcasing quality of line and shape type, weight, and value, quality of evolution and scale shift of the composition, understanding of figure-ground relationships, and craft and care of development of the final composition

Consistency and evolution between exercises is revealed through communication, relationship of, and influence between material use and technique that is original and developed. Product:
The culmination of the project reveals a collection of work that captures the concept of the project: iteration, evolution, and interpretation of pattern and texture. This is made evident by the execution of compositional strategies and organization, mark making and media representation, range of employed techniques, and tonal value ranges in b/w and color, and craft, concluding the individual's efforts to achieve dynamic and evolving pattern and texture imagery.

Presentation:
Success of and understanding of concepts introduced in the project are made evident by the display of visual artifacts produced and the makers verbal participation and efforts to clarify and describe their experiences through the evolving exercises. This is observed through informal and formal reviews such as desk crits, pinup and small group discussions, and final project review. Verbal also includes the use of learned design terminology explored in the project to communicate a concept. Physical presentation is determined by the informal and formal presentation setting with consideration to preparedness, care and craft of display and arrangement of work to communicate the sequential concept of the project.
