Exercise 1 Assignment: Color Analyses

Due Date: Monday, October 3, at the beginning of class

Objective:

To deepen your understanding of color, form, and shape by engaging in an analysis of both a famous art piece and a corresponding object from your environment. This exercise aims to build your compositional awareness and set the foundation for the following exercises in Project 2.

Deliverables:

• Two 11x17 sheets in landscape orientation

  • One sheet for Step 1
  • One sheet for Step 2

• Each sheet should contain your analysis, findings, and any insights gained through the medium/method of your choice. This could be through sketches, digital renderings, collage, or even photography.

Instructions:

Step 1 – Analyze the Color of a Famous Art Piece

2. Analyze Color: Document the colors used in the artwork. Take note of the primary, secondary, and even tertiary colors. Are there repeating color schemes? What emotions do these colors evoke?

3. Analyze Form and Shape: Look at the geometry of the artwork. Are there predominant shapes or forms? How do they interact with the colors?

4. Document: On an 11x17 sheet, present your color, shape, and form analysis. You can include swatches, pie charts, or any other medium that effectively communicates your findings.

• Note: Consider using tools like Adobe Color to extract and analyze the color palette of the artwork.

Step 2 – Analyze an Object Based on Your Selected Art Piece

1. Select an Object: Choose an object from your environment that you feel corresponds with or relates to the art piece you selected in Step 1.

2. Analyze Color: Just as you did with the art piece, analyze the colors present in your object. Compare and contrast this with your art piece. Do the colors tell a similar story?

3. Analyze Form and Shape: Examine the geometry of the object. How do its shapes and forms interact with its colors? How does this relate to your chosen art piece?

4. Synthesize: What insight have you gained throughout your analysis? This should not just be a presentation of facts but also a synthesis where you compare and contrast the object with your chosen art piece.
