Music is a vital part of human culture, which was created for many purposes. The purposes of music may change or overlap depending on the context. The Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" was originally written to be sung in religious services - ceremonial music. The tune was then adopted in Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, Ballet for Martha to accompany dance - utilitarian music. When Copland rearranged the ballet to an orchestral suite, the tune became art music.
