INTERVENTION & PRECEDENTS
Research a site specific intervention for your landmark design place. Decide upon a physical location that you are considering as your final landmark design inspiration. At this stage, and for this exercise we are altering the concept of the location by imagining / describing / illustrating what is possible. The final design (Exercise 3) will take the physical form of the concept in a new format: book, map, or digital reality.
- The location should be one that you have access to, that you can physically explore (inside or outside).
- You are being encouraged to consider either a physical or augmented intervention to the location. If the location is on campus and you plan to incorporate a physical change YOU MUST discuss the idea with the instructor FIRST!
- You can dream big for your landmark concept. Your role as designer for Ex. 2 is to imagine and develop the concept through an intervention of a space from ALL ANGLES / VIEWPOINTS / PERSPECTIVES of that space.
- Fall break is approaching, if there is a location you are inspired by and will be traveling to and can envision a specific site you want to work with, please discuss the ideas with instructor to work on a timeline.

STUDENT EXAMPLES from Professor Tom Neppl
Prof Neppl's class took a slightly different approach to the project but are employing similar research techniques. These are four excellent student examples of Place-Intervention:

INVESTIGATE & DEVELOP CONCEPTS
- Writing and text used to describe the place DUE: NOV. 14, 11 a.m. to CyBox
- Write a full page summary proposal of your ideas. Describe the location in words, use the sensory prompts from Ex. 1. Anyone reading your proposal should have a vivid, visual idea of the location and how it will change. Describe how the location is currently, then how the environment / place will be altered after your intervention. Consider both descriptive and logistical elements as topics of the summary.
- If you are traveling to the location during break, please note your plan in the summary document so that it is evident you have a documentation plan in progress. We will need to develop a plan for Part 4.
- Document Precedents (artists and designers) documented in final review guidelines noted below
DUE: ongoing research, final submission DEC. 12, noon, CyBox- Research and document existing artists and designers that you would consider precendent inspiration. For example, if you are interested in creating a landscape intervention -- who are the artists/designers creating that kind of work? Create a document which contains a few image examples that you found inspiring and influential to the direction of your landmark design Place project. This may be multiple artists or design firms, note their name and if applicable a link to their website.
- Documentation of the place DUE: Nov. 14, 11 a.m. to CyBox
- Travel to the location, begin to document through the use of photos -- you will need more than one photo, the goal is to capture the location as it exists currently from multiple viewpoints. Upload the images to CyBox using proper labels: FirstandLastname_PlaceEx.2_imageviewpointname.jpg
- If you are traveling to the location during break, please note your plan in the summary document so that it is evident you have a documentation plan in progress.
- Response to the environment (place location). DUE: Nov. 16, 2 p.m. If constructing a physical intervention on-site, follow protocols of stewardship))
- Research your location...consider the who, what, why? Does the space already tell a story? How will you alter that story? How will you leave a mark? Will it be ephemeral? What materials do you imagine your landmark could be built from?
- Sketch / Build / Digitally Manipulate your ideas intervening upon your photographs:
- "Sketch" what your landmark may look like, consider the scale and how a person may interact with the landmark. Sketch can be in the form of a digital drawing, tracing paper, paper cutouts, paper models, or collaging existing images to build your concept -- no wrong way to "sketch" -- the output may depend upon your concept
- Apply your sketch to the original photographs -- imposing your concepts -- photoshop, transparency film, tracing paper, projectors....
- Physical 'sketches' will be turned in by the end of class Nov. 16.
MATERIALS / TOOLS
- Photos and/or well-developed sketches
- Consider topography / aerial perspectives
- Paper, plants, transparency film, film, old maps, new maps....unlimited possibilities
- Scissors, XActo, Ruler, Pencils, Markers
- Projectors, cameras, audio recorders

AUGMENTED REALITY
(please note: if you decide to go this route, you will need to research technology on your own initiative, instructor may only assist with concept development but will try to help)
